Why Proper Sod Installation Makes All the Difference

A new lawn can transform your property overnight — but only if the sod is installed correctly. Here's what goes into a professional sod job that actually lasts.

More Than Just Rolling Out Grass

Many homeowners assume sod installation is straightforward: roll it out, water it, done. In reality, a sod job that fails within the first season almost always comes down to poor ground preparation. The grass is only as good as the soil beneath it.

Ground Preparation is Everything

Before a single roll of sod is laid, the ground needs to be properly graded to ensure water drains away from the home's foundation. Low spots cause pooling; high spots cause dry patches. We till and level the soil, remove debris and old roots, and add topsoil where needed to create an even base.

Choosing the Right Sod

Not all sod is the same. The variety needs to suit your climate and sun exposure. For the Pickering and Durham Region, we source sod that handles Ontario winters and bounces back quickly in spring.

Watering in the First Two Weeks

Newly laid sod needs consistent moisture to establish roots. For the first two weeks, water daily — ideally in the early morning. After that, you can reduce frequency as the roots take hold. Walking on it too early is the single most common mistake that sets sod back.

Long-Term Results

A properly installed lawn increases your home's curb appeal and resale value. It also reduces erosion and gives children and pets a clean, safe outdoor space. Done right once, it lasts for years.
